Can a handyman install a ceiling fan in Maryland?
The wiring on a ceiling fan is electrical work in Maryland, so the connection goes to a licensed electrician or someone under one. The box also has to be rated for a fan, and most light boxes are not. A handyman can assemble the fan and finish the ceiling, and on our jobs the electrician handles the box and the wires.
What Maryland law says
Maryland requires a Maryland Home Improvement Commission (MHIC) contractor license for anyone who performs, or offers to perform, home improvement work for a homeowner (Business Regulation Article, section 8-301(a)). Repair and replacement of part of a house counts as home improvement under section 8-101(g), and the statute sets no dollar minimum. A handyman who charges for the work needs the license.
Wiring is a separate trade. Under the Business Occupations and Professions Article, section 6-101(k), electrical services means installing, repairing, maintaining or altering any electrical equipment, wiring or fixture. That work belongs to a licensed master electrician or someone working under one, and an MHIC license by itself does not cover it. Section 8-301(c)(4) exempts licensed electricians from the MHIC rule, not the other way around.
How we handle it
A fan on a plain light box works loose over a year and then wobbles, which is the call we get after a bargain install. The electrician swaps in a fan brace box when there is no fan rated box, then mounts and wires the fan. Where there was no fixture at all, a new circuit or a switch leg is a permit job.
Text the room, the ceiling height and a photo of what is up there now. A fan with a light kit and a remote is a longer visit than a bare fan, and the price says which one you are getting.
On our side this falls under fixture and appliance installs, and the price range is on the ceiling fan installation cost in maryland page.
Questions we get about this job
- Is a fan rated box required in Maryland?
- Yes. The electrical code adopted by Maryland counties requires a box listed for fan support for any ceiling fan. Our electrician checks the box before the fan goes up.
- Can a handyman replace a fan where one already hangs?
- The wiring is still electrical work, so it goes to the electrician. A handyman can assemble the new fan and take the old one down for disposal.
- How long does a fan install take?
- One to two hours when the box is already fan rated. Add an hour when a brace box goes in. We quote the visit, not the hours.
